From the Madrid World / Itineraries

Madrid's Historic Core and Art Axis

A flexible group spanning Plaza Mayor and the Royal Palace, then Gran Vía, Cibeles, the Prado corridor, Retiro and formal gateways.

Madrid's Historic Core and Art Axis

Why go

Split this itinerary into two complementary clusters rather than one continuous checklist. Use the first day for Plaza Mayor, Palacio Real, Catedral de la Almudena and Teatro Real before continuing through Puerta del Sol and Gran Vía. Reserve the second for Plaza de Cibeles, Puerta de Alcalá, Paseo del Prado and Museo Nacional del Prado, with Buen Retiro Park as the outdoor counterpoint. Entering the Prado should be the main interior commitment, while smaller exterior stops can flex around it.

Useful to know

  • Keep the Royal Palace, Catedral de la Almudena and Teatro Real together on the west side of the centre.
  • Use Gran Vía, the Metrópolis Building, Plaza de Cibeles and Puerta de Alcalá as the transition toward Paseo del Prado and Retiro.
  • Allow a separate substantial block for the Museo del Prado if entering; Retiro works well as an outdoor finish.
