Malmöhus Castle

Explore a Danish-era fortress that now holds part of Malmö Museum. Its castle rooms, exhibitions and aquarium make this a longer indoor stop than a quick look at the walls.

Why go

Malmöhus lets you see how a sixteenth-century stronghold became a museum setting. The fortress itself carries the story, while the exhibitions, aquarium and Malmö Art Museum give different reasons to go inside. Allow time to move between them rather than expecting a single castle-room circuit.

What to look for

  • The fortress walls recall Malmö’s period under Danish rule.
  • Castle exhibitions share the museum visit with an aquarium.
  • Malmö Art Museum is included within the Slottet museum visit.

The full story

A castle was first founded here in 1434 under Eric of Pomerania. The earlier structure was partly removed, and Christian III of Denmark built a new fortress in the 1530s. Those layers explain why Malmöhus belongs to the city’s Danish history as well as to its present museum life. One later prisoner was James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell and third husband of Mary, Queen of Scots, held at Malmöhus from 1568 to 1573 before being moved elsewhere in Denmark. His story is a reminder that this was a working stronghold and prison, not simply a grand residence. Today the castle forms part of a broader museum visit, with exhibitions and an aquarium inside the historic setting. That mix lets you move between the building’s own past and the collections now housed within it.

Useful to know

  • Plan the castle and museum galleries as one substantial indoor visit.
  • Check current access details if stairs would limit your visit to upper exhibitions.
