Why go
The palace combines formal rooms with the spaces used to administer religious justice. It began as a courthouse before becoming the inquisitor's residence in 1574, then changed repeatedly as successive occupants enlarged it. Its later role as an ethnography museum links the building with Maltese household customs and religious culture.
What to look for
- The palace's tribunal and prison spaces
- Rooms shaped by successive inquisitors
- The courtyard and layered architecture
Useful to know
- Pair the palace with Fort St Angelo while exploring Birgu.
- Read the courtroom and household spaces together rather than treating the building only as a palace.
