Why go
Before Valletta existed, this was the Order of St John's headquarters and a central stronghold during the Great Siege. Medieval castle remains were transformed into a gunpowder fortress, then altered again in the seventeenth century. Its waterfront position helps explain why Birgu became the Knights' first base in Malta.
What to look for
- The fort's harbour-facing batteries
- Carlos de Grunenbergh's coat of arms at the gate
- Views towards Valletta
Useful to know
- Approach through Birgu to understand the fort's relationship with the town.
- Combine the fort with Inquisitor's Palace for two different forms of authority.
