Red Tower Malta

The red watchtower on Marfa Ridge combines fortification history with views over Mellieħa Bay and the islands beyond. The exposed hilltop setting is part of its appeal.

Red Tower Malta

Why go

Built between 1647 and 1649, Saint Agatha's Tower was a major northern stronghold rather than a small lookout. Its four corner turrets, thick walls and cannon openings show how defenders could cover the base of the building. The outlook towards Comino and Gozo makes the coastal warning network easy to imagine.

What to look for

  • Four corner turrets with fishtail crenellations
  • The red exterior
  • Views over Mellieħa Bay, Comino and Gozo

Useful to know

  • Combine the ridge viewpoint with Għadira Bay below.
  • Check the tower's public opening arrangements before expecting interior access.
