Why go
The M60 gives drivers a way to approach different parts of Greater Manchester from the M62, M6 and connecting roads. For a central visit, the useful decision is where to leave the car: a space near your destination may save a slow cross-centre drive.
The full story
The M60 circles the Manchester conurbation, so a drive into the city starts with a choice of approach rather than one universal exit. The M62 connects from the Leeds and Liverpool directions, while the M6 links longer north–south journeys to roads serving Greater Manchester. The route that suits a stop in the north of the conurbation can differ from the route into south Manchester or towards the airport. Once inside the orbital road, the inner ring road helps with city-centre orientation. That broad road pattern is more useful than memorising an old shortcut or a particular junction. Central parking is another decision to make in advance: driving to a named car park near your first stop gives the last part of the trip a clear endpoint. Read restrictions where you actually park, as rules can vary between Manchester and neighbouring Salford and can change by street.
Useful to know
- Set your chosen car park or parking area as the final destination, rather than navigating only to “Manchester city centre”.
- Use the M60 to choose the side of the conurbation that matches your destination.
- Check current parking rules and charges on the street or car park signage before leaving the car.
