Why go
The Northern Quarter puts two distinct kinds of independent shopping close together: Afflecks gathers small alternative traders under one roof, while Manchester Craft and Design Centre brings makers into a former market building. Visit both if you want to compare ready-made finds with work by individual artists and designers.
The full story
Manchester’s central shopping areas serve different purposes. Market Street and Manchester Arndale are useful for familiar high-street shops, but they tell you little about the city’s independent creative scene. Head into the Northern Quarter for that. Afflecks occupies a multi-floor Victorian building, with clothing, music and art among the draws. Its appeal lies in browsing stalls rather than arriving for a single brand. Manchester Craft and Design Centre offers a quieter contrast in the old Smithfield Market building. The market setting now holds makers’ studios and shops, so the building itself helps explain how this part of town has been reused for creative work. Pair the two places if you have limited shopping time: Afflecks suits a broad, eclectic hunt, while the Craft and Design Centre is more focused on work by individual makers. Check each venue’s current opening information before setting out, especially if one is the main reason for your trip.
