The full story
Marseille’s old harbour is the simplest place to read the city: fishing boats, broad quays and the hilltop basilica all meet around one working waterfront.
Begin here to understand how the port still shapes central Marseille. The Canebière reaches the water at one end, while the opposite shore leads towards Abbaye Saint-Victor. The harbour is as useful for orienting yourself as it is for a stroll.
- Norman Foster’s mirrored Ombrière reflects the people and pavement beneath it.
- The fish market and working quays keep the harbour’s daily role in view.
- Notre-Dame de la Garde rises above the boats on the south side.
Walk both sides of the harbour if you want to compare the busy central quays with the Saint-Victor shore.
Use the Vieux-Port as the starting point for a walk up the Canebière.
