Porte d’Aix
A triumphal arch at an old approach to Marseille, Porte d’Aix is a short outdoor stop for sculpted reliefs and the redesigned space around Place Jules Guesde.
Why go
The arch marks the former road into the city from Aix-en-Provence. Its battle reliefs and classical columns show how a changing political project became a nineteenth-century monument to victory, while the square gives room to view both façades. The place reads best from outside, at walking pace.
What to look for
Battle reliefs and columns cover the triumphal arch.
Place Jules Guesde opens views of the monument from both sides.
Useful to know
Walk around the arch to compare its two decorated faces.
Use it as a brief stop when moving between Saint-Charles and the Vieux-Port area.
