Casa de Montejo Museum
Examine an elaborate sixteenth-century façade and museum rooms in a former Montejo family house on Mérida's main square, a focused stop for architecture and history.
Casa de Montejo makes the colonial social order visible through a domestic building rather than a church or government palace. Its sculpted entrance is worth studying slowly before entering the museum. The later interiors and exhibitions add another layer, showing that the house continued to change long after its original construction.
