Orpheum Theatre

The Orpheum is a working historic theater on downtown Hennepin Avenue. A ticketed show gives you the chance to see its richly decorated auditorium as well as its narrow street frontage.

Why go

The surprise is how much theater fits behind the modest Hennepin Avenue entrance. A long lobby leads to an auditorium set back toward Hawthorne Avenue, with ornate plasterwork and a patterned dome. Opened in 1921 as the Hennepin Theater, the Orpheum is now one of the historic houses programmed by Hennepin Arts; the performance is the reason to enter.

What to look for

  • A long lobby links the narrow Hennepin Avenue facade to the set-back auditorium.
  • Terra-cotta reliefs decorate the restored lobby.
  • Plaster garlands and a dome finished with many small aluminum-leaf squares enrich the auditorium.

Useful to know

  • Select a performance before planning an interior visit; access follows the event schedule.
  • Arrive with time to look through the lobby before the show begins.
