Musée Fabre

A major art museum close to Place de la Comédie, Musée Fabre rewards time with European painting across several centuries and a strong Montpellier connection through its founders and collectors.

Musée Fabre

Why go

The collection moves from older European masters to Delacroix, Courbet, Frédéric Bazille and Pierre Soulages. That range makes it a substantial indoor visit rather than a quick gallery stop. Fabre’s own role as a painter and donor also ties the museum to the city that built it.

What to look for

  • Paintings by Courbet and Montpellier-born Frédéric Bazille connect the collection to the nineteenth century.
  • Works by Pierre Soulages shift the visit toward modern art.
  • Earlier galleries include European painters such as Veronese and Zurbarán.

The full story

Painter François-Xavier Fabre gave his collection to Montpellier in the 1820s, setting the museum on a path shaped by further private gifts. Earlier municipal paintings formed the starting collection, but Fabre’s donation gave the institution its name and a permanent home. Later collectors, including Antoine Valedau and Alfred Bruyas, widened its reach. Bruyas was especially important for nineteenth-century art, helping connect Montpellier to painters working beyond the city. The museum’s galleries now let you follow those layers rather than treating the works as one undifferentiated collection. Look for the shift from older European painting to Courbet and Bazille, then on to Soulages. The building and collection have been expanded and reorganised, but the pattern of gifts remains central to its identity.

Useful to know

  • Allow enough time to follow more than one period of the collection.
  • Combine the museum with Place de la Comédie and Esplanade Charles-de-Gaulle nearby.
  • Check the museum’s access information before visiting if you need a lift.
