Elephanta Caves

On an island in Mumbai Harbour, these rock-cut Shiva shrines reward a dedicated outing, especially for the monumental sculptures inside Cave 1.

Why go

The main cave turns a hillside into a temple of carved pillars and large Shiva reliefs. Stand before Sadashiva, then look across the other panels to see how the same deity takes different forms. The island setting makes this a separate excursion from a walk through central Mumbai.

What to look for

  • Sadashiva, the monumental three-faced relief in Cave 1.
  • Shiva panels carved into the walls around the main hall.
  • Rows of stone pillars that shape the cave into a temple hall.

Useful to know

  • Allow for the harbour crossing and the uphill approach as well as time inside the caves.
  • Check the official cave opening information and ferry service before setting out.
