Castel Sant'Elmo
Climb to the Vomero fortress for a high view across Naples and its bay. The exposed ramparts reward a clear day and require time beyond the adjacent Certosa.
Castel Sant’Elmo turns the city into a legible map: the historic center lies below, with the bay and Vesuvius beyond it. The fortress itself matters too, with angular defenses built for command of the hill. Go for both the military architecture and the panorama rather than treating it as a viewpoint alone.
What to look for
Angular fortress walls and ramparts
Broad views over the city and bay
Useful to know
Pair it with the nearby Certosa di San Martino, but allow separate time for each.
Check the fortress’s current entrance arrangements before climbing to Vomero.
