San Domenico Maggiore
A Dominican basilica beside one of the historic centre's busiest squares. Its Gothic core and later chapels make a useful stop along Spaccanapoli.
Why go
The church grew from a medieval Dominican foundation and accumulated chapels and noble burials over centuries. Its association with Thomas Aquinas adds an intellectual strand to the architecture. Outside, the spire in Piazza San Domenico Maggiore records the city's response to the plague of 1656.
What to look for
The Gothic basilica and its later chapels
The Aragonese noble burials
The Saint Dominic spire in the square outside
Useful to know
Look at the spire before entering so the church and square read as one stop.
Check the visitor-tour arrangements separately from ordinary church access.
Continue to Cappella Sansevero for a much smaller, sculpture-led sacred space nearby.
