The distinction between toleration and equality changes how Dutch religious history reads. In the eighteenth century, Catholics, Jews and some Protestant groups were tolerated while facing discrimination. Later pillarisation kept religious communities socially separate. These histories give more substance to the country’s reputation for consensus than a simple claim that Dutch society has always been open.
