Why go
Rembrandt, Frans Hals and Johannes Vermeer are central names, but the museum also spans objects and histories beyond painting. Its location near the Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk Museum makes Museum Square useful for comparing different artistic interests before deciding how to divide your museum time.
The full story
The Rijksmuseum began in The Hague in 1800. It moved to Amsterdam in 1808, occupying the Royal Palace and later the Trippenhuis before gaining a purpose-built home. Pierre Cuypers designed the main building, which opened in 1885. The museum’s changing addresses form a useful reminder that its national role developed before it reached Museum Square. A major renovation led to the reopening of the main building in 2013. The collections connect Dutch art with a much broader historical span, including works by Rembrandt, Frans Hals and Johannes Vermeer, alongside other objects of art and history. Asian art adds another strand to that scope. Around the museum, the Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum and Concertgebouw place it within a wider cultural district. Treat those neighbours as separate choices, each with its own focus, rather than assuming Museum Square represents a single museum visit.
