La Cuba
La Cuba is a compact Norman pleasure pavilion from the former royal park. Its blocklike exterior conceals Islamic-inspired details and traces of an indoor fountain.
This is a quieter companion to the Zisa for anyone tracing how Palermo's Norman rulers used architecture for leisure. The plain mass of the building sets up the surprise of the central hall's muqarnas and fountain remains, evidence of a more elaborate interior life than the exterior suggests.
What to look for
The rectangular pavilion's blind arches and niches
Muqarnas decoration in the central hall
Traces of the hall's marble fountain
Useful to know
Pair it with the Zisa if exploring the Norman royal park sites; the two buildings show different versions of court leisure.
