Santa Maria della Gancia
In the Kalsa, this former Franciscan church combines Gothic-influenced entrances with a richly altered interior. It suits a slower walk through the district's layered religious sites.
The contrast between the older portals and later decoration is the reason to step inside. Look for the coffered ceiling and Serpotta stuccoes after taking in the exterior: the sequence shows how a church begun in the 15th century was substantially reshaped without losing its earlier face.

Useful to know
Compare the portals with the interior before continuing through the Kalsa; the difference tells the building's story quickly.
