Place Vendôme

A formal square of unified façades and the Vendôme Column, best for travelers who want to read royal, Napoleonic and Revolutionary layers in one compact walk.

Place Vendôme

Why go

Place Vendôme is worth a detour for its disciplined architecture and unusually visible political history. Hardouin-Mansart's matching façades turn the square into a single composition, while the central column recalls Napoleon and later conflict over imperial symbols. It also leads naturally to Rue de la Paix, making it a strong short stop between the Tuileries area and the Opéra district.

What to look for

  • The Vendôme Column was modelled on Trajan's Column and commemorates Austerlitz.
  • Hardouin-Mansart's pilasters, pediments and rising window arches make the façades read as one ensemble.
  • Rue de la Paix provides the direct link toward the Palais Garnier.

The full story

Place Vendôme was laid out in 1702 to celebrate Louis XIV's armies and was first called Place des Conquêtes. An equestrian statue of the king stood at its centre until the French Revolution destroyed it. The square itself was designed through a compromise between royal ambition and private building: Hardouin-Mansart created the coordinated street façades, while purchasers built behind them. Its focal point changed again under Napoleon, when the Vendôme Column was erected to commemorate Austerlitz. During the Paris Commune the column was dismantled as an imperial symbol, then rebuilt in 1874. The square's restrained architecture now contains a record of monarchy, revolution and empire rather than a single historical moment. The unified façades make those changes easier to read against a stable frame.

Useful to know

  • Walk the full perimeter before leaving; the architectural order is clearest when you compare the long sides and central projections.
  • Combine the square with Rue de la Paix and the Opéra area, rather than making a special trip solely for the column.
  • The column’s internal staircase is not open to the public.
