San Pietro in Vincoli

A small Pisan Romanesque church rewards a closer look for its patterned stonework and, if open, an inlaid floor above an older crypt. Confirm access before making a special trip.

Why go

The compact exterior reveals the decorative vocabulary of Pisa’s medieval churches away from the cathedral square. Inside, the Cosmatesque-style pavement and crypt make the building’s layered history tangible, but public entry is uncertain; it works best as a short stop while exploring central Pisa.

What to look for

  • Blind arches, lozenges and round windows articulate the Romanesque façade.
  • An inlaid pavement covers a crypt with groin vaults and reused Roman capitals.
  • The bell tower began as a medieval civic tower.

The full story

Augustinian builders raised San Pietro in Vincoli over an earlier structure between the late 11th and early 12th centuries. Its façade uses blind arches, pilaster strips, small round windows and lozenge shapes: a compact lesson in the Pisan Romanesque style. Within, the inlaid pavement sits over a crypt whose groin vaults and Roman capitals reveal older material beneath the medieval church. The tower beside it began as a civic structure, another reminder that sacred and urban buildings could share a close setting. The church also once safeguarded a manuscript of Justinian’s Roman law. According to the historical account, it came into Pisan hands after the sack of Amalfi in 1137 and was transferred to Florence after Pisa fell in 1406. The manuscript is no longer a sight here, but its history gives this modest building a wider place in the rivalry between Tuscan cities.

Useful to know

  • Check current church access before planning to see the pavement or crypt.
  • Allow a brief exterior stop if the church is closed.
