Igreja de São Francisco do Porto

Behind a Gothic church exterior lies one of Porto's richest Baroque interiors, where gilded woodwork almost overwhelms the medieval structure beneath it.

Igreja de São Francisco do Porto

Why go

The church offers Porto's sharpest contrast between Gothic stone and Baroque talha dourada. Its aisles, pillars, window frames and chapels are wrapped in carved, gilded ornament, making the building especially rewarding for visitors comparing the city's medieval and 18th-century layers.

What to look for

  • Gilded woodcarving spreads across the aisle roofs, pillars, window frames and chapels.
  • The dense Baroque decoration partly conceals the underlying Gothic architecture.
  • Near the entrance, a noble family pantheon preserves a Gothic portal with heraldic carving.

The full story

São Francisco began as a Gothic Franciscan church, but the interior visitors encounter today was decisively reshaped in the early 18th century. Portuguese woodcarvers covered the side aisles and apse chapels in talha dourada, building a continuous surface of carved and gilded ornament over much of the medieval structure. The contrast is the point: pointed Gothic forms still organize the space, while Baroque decoration competes for every visible surface. Earlier history survives in the noble pantheons created during the 15th and 16th centuries. Near the entrance, the former burial place of the family of Luís Álvares de Sousa retains a Gothic portal with a coat of arms and dedicatory inscription, even though a Baroque altarpiece now occupies the historic chapel.

Useful to know

  • Let your eyes adjust before examining the side chapels; the dense gilding is easier to read section by section.
  • Combine it with Palácio da Bolsa nearby for two very different displays of decorated interior space.
