Letná: Metronome and Protest Ground

Letná’s high ground links broad Vltava views with two very different memories of the twentieth century: mass demonstrations nearby and the metronome above the former Stalin monument site.

Letná: Metronome and Protest Ground

Why go

Use Letná to orient yourself above the river and to understand why this ridge matters beyond its panorama. The metronome marks a place once occupied by a Stalin monument, while the neighboring plain hosted major Velvet Revolution protests. The park’s paths and overlooks give those events a setting you can read in the landscape.

What to look for

  • The metronome stands on the former plinth of a large Stalin monument.
  • The Vltava and Old Town spread below the edge of Letná hill.
  • The neighboring Letná plain was a major protest site in November 1989.

The full story

Letná rises above a steep bank of the Vltava, which makes its views of the Old Town unusually broad. The high ground also gave it a prominent political role. A vast monument to Joseph Stalin was erected here in 1955 and demolished in 1962. The metronome installed on its former site in 1991 changed the meaning of that visible position over the city. Nearby Letná plain was a gathering place during the Velvet Revolution: large demonstrations in November 1989 preceded a nationwide strike. These events are best understood by moving between the metronome’s plinth and the open ground rather than treating the park as a single viewpoint. The older paths and structures show another layer of the area too; Hanavský Pavilion, a cast-iron building from the 1891 Jubilee Exhibition, belongs to Letná’s leisure landscape. The park’s open ground and river edge show why Letná has served both leisure and public gathering.

Useful to know

  • Treat the metronome as a separate landmark within a broader walk through Letná.
  • Leave time to move between the river-facing edge and the open plain; they tell different parts of the area’s story.
