Vítkov National Memorial
The memorial crowns Vítkov Hill above Žižkov, joining a vast Jan Žižka statue with the Tomb of an Unknown Soldier. Come for Czech state history and the hilltop setting.
Why go
The equestrian Žižka points back to the Hussite battle fought on this hill in 1420, while the building reflects twentieth-century Czechoslovak statehood. Its later use under the communist regime adds another layer to read carefully. The Tomb of an Unknown Soldier makes this a place of remembrance as well as an architectural landmark.
What to look for
Jan Žižka’s equestrian statue stands outside the memorial.
The Tomb of an Unknown Soldier is part of the memorial.
Vítkov’s hilltop setting connects the monument with Žižkov below.
