The full story
This small Lower Town square marks the site of Champlain’s 1608 settlement and concentrates several layers of French and British urban history.
Pause here rather than treating the square as scenery between shops. The outline of Champlain’s habitation, the bust of Louis XIV and the surrounding masonry show how a trading place became a carefully restored symbol of French North America. The compact setting makes those layers easy to compare.
- Paving marks the footprint of Champlain’s second habitation.
- Notre-Dame-des-Victoires closes the square’s river-facing side.
Pair it with Petit-Champlain and Musée de la civilisation.
Visit before midday or later in the evening for a clearer view of the small square.
