Catacomb of Generosa

A small single-level cemetery near the Tiber’s Magliana bend forms part of an archaeological landscape that includes a pagan sacred grove and an early Christian basilica.

Catacomb of Generosa

Why go

Generosa offers a less monumental view of Roman burial culture. Its plain galleries served nearby farming communities, while the associated martyrs and Damasan basilica turned the cemetery into a place of worship. Reused inscriptions also connect it to the Arval Brethren’s older pagan sanctuary above.

What to look for

  • Notice the restrained burial galleries, which differ from the richer painted chambers of larger catacombs.
  • Relate the underground cemetery to the remains of the semi-subterranean basilica built under Pope Damasus.
  • Consider the site’s overlap with the sacred grove and records of the Arval Brethren.

Useful to know

  • Treat this as a specialist archaeological visit rather than a casual central-Rome stop.
  • Current weekly access was not verified; confirm arrangements before traveling to the Portuense area.
  • Allow roughly an hour if a visit is available.
