Catacombs of Priscilla

An extensive cemetery off Via Salaria preserves early Christian frescoes, burial chambers and traditions connected with martyrs and several early popes.

Catacombs of Priscilla

Why go

Priscilla is especially valuable for its painted spaces. The Greek Chapel contains third-century biblical scenes, while early images of Mary and the Christ child show Christian art before standardized medieval forms. Quarry galleries, a Roman villa cryptoportico and family burial areas add topographical variety.

What to look for

  • In the Greek Chapel, examine the banquet scene known as the Fractio Panis and adjacent biblical narratives.
  • Look for the early image of Mary with the Christ child near a figure identified as Isaiah.
  • Notice how painted chambers interrupt the repetitive rows of simpler wall graves.

Useful to know

  • Allow about an hour for the underground visit.
  • The route is confined, cool and unsuitable for anyone uncomfortable with narrow subterranean passages.
  • Check the official site for current tour access before going to Via Salaria.
