Catacombs of San Valentino

Near the second mile of Via Flaminia, fragmentary catacombs and basilica remains preserve the complicated archaeological tradition surrounding the Roman martyr Valentine.

Catacombs of San Valentino

Why go

The site is significant less for an extensive intact tunnel network than for the relationship between martyr cult, basilica and cemetery. Excavation indicates that Valentine’s grave lay outside the catacomb beneath an early basilica, while floods and landslides later made much of the galleries inaccessible.

What to look for

  • Distinguish the surviving outer basilica and entrance ambulatory from the largely inaccessible gallery system.
  • Consider how successive churches developed around the venerated grave attributed to Valentine.
  • Use the site to understand why archaeological evidence complicates later saint traditions.

Useful to know

  • This is a specialist stop with limited surviving access rather than a full underground catacomb circuit.
  • No current weekly visitor schedule was verified; confirm whether entry is possible before traveling.
  • Allow about 45 minutes if an arranged visit is available.
