Mauritshuis
The Mauritshuis pairs Dutch and Flemish paintings with an intimate, symmetrical former residence beside the Hofvijver in central The Hague.
Why go
This is a compact old-master art stop in the political centre, with works associated with Vermeer, Rembrandt, Jan Steen, Frans Hals, Rubens and other northern European painters. The domestic scale keeps attention on individual pictures rather than monumental galleries nearby.
What to look for
The collection grew from the paintings of stadtholder William V.
The two-storey building was organised around four apartments and a great hall.
A fire destroyed the original cupola in 1704.
