Why go
Montevideo is worth seeing from outside as part of a study of Rotterdam’s waterfront architecture. Opened in 2005, the 43-storey tower combines apartments, offices and retail rather than functioning as a public lookout. Its giant M serves as both the building’s logo and a wind vane, giving the skyline detail meaning from across the river.
What to look for
- The eight-metre roof-mounted M designed to turn as a wind vane
- Mecanoo's mix of high-rise forms within one 43-storey composition
- Montevideo stands among the towers of Wilhelminapier beside the Nieuwe Maas
Useful to know
- View the tower from Wilhelminapier and from the opposite riverbank for different readings of its silhouette.
- Do not plan on interior sightseeing; general public access has not been established.
- Combine it with Erasmusbrug and nearby waterfront architecture.
