Bronze Horseman
See the monument to Peter the Great near the Neva for its sculpture and literary associations. This is a compact outdoor stop within the central-square area.
Commissioned by Catherine the Great and made by Étienne Maurice Falconet, the monument links two rulers through a single public image. Pushkin's later poem gave the Bronze Horseman its familiar name. Look at the horse and rider against the shaped stone pedestal, then consider how the riverside setting contributes to the monument's presence.
