Why go
The risks that most directly change a Saint Martin outing are often tied to what you are doing: leaving a rental car at a beach, spending hours in the sun or approaching the runway at Maho. Plan those moments before setting out, and arrange a taxi if your evening includes drinking.
The full story
At Maho Beach, aircraft pass close to the shoreline because the airport runway ends beside it. The spectacle brings a serious hazard: departing aircraft can throw air, sand and debris with enough force to cause severe injury. Do not hold the airport fence or approach the runway to experience jet blast. For beach and town visits by rental car, keep valuables with you rather than leaving them in the parked vehicle. Lock the car when you leave it. These actions are more useful than assuming that a busy visitor area protects belongings. Sun exposure also deserves attention across a day of coastal stops. Use sunscreen according to its instructions and add a hat or shade when possible. Finally, the island’s roads include coastal stretches and hills. If you have been drinking, arrange a taxi rather than driving back along them.
Useful to know
- At Maho, keep away from the airport fence and jet blast.
- Take valuables out of the rental car before leaving it parked.
- Arrange a taxi home if you plan to drink.
