Why go
Choosing transport by geographic zone saves time and energy. Walk the historic core, use lifts or funiculars for selected hills, and check current public transport for Hellbrunn, Untersberg or cross-border outings before committing the day's complete route, timing and pace.
The full story
Most left-bank Old Town sights sit within a comfortable walking area, and footbridges make the right bank easy to add. Getreidegasse and adjoining lanes are pedestrian spaces, so car access is limited. Kapuzinerberg and Festungsberg introduce steep paths and stairs; the fortress funicular and Mönchsberg lift can preserve energy, but they do not serve the same hill. City buses are useful for the railway station, Hellbrunn, the airport and southern connections. Regional buses and trains extend toward Untersberg, Berchtesgaden and the Salzkammergut, though route numbers and timetables change. Use a current operator planner, note the correct direction and allow transfer margin. Cycling can work along flatter river routes, but crowded pedestrian lanes require restraint and careful compliance with local rules.
Useful to know
- Walk within the historic core and save public transport for the station, Hellbrunn and outer districts.
- Check which hill a lift or funicular actually serves before relying on it.
