Why go
A good walk follows contours and transit links, using hills for views rather than spending the whole day climbing between unrelated attractions. Downtown, Chinatown, North Beach, the Mission, the Castro, and the Embarcadero each support focused walks with many nearby anchors.
The full story
Downtown, Chinatown, North Beach, the Mission, the Castro, and the Embarcadero each support focused walks with many nearby anchors. The challenge comes when a flat map hides Russian Hill, Nob Hill, Telegraph Hill, or the central ridge. Look at elevation before connecting districts and use cable cars, buses, or diagonal streets to avoid unnecessary climbs. Public stairways can create memorable shortcuts, but surfaces and gradients vary. Fog and wind arrive quickly near exposed summits and the ocean, while eastern streets may remain clear. Wear shoes suited to steep pavement and stop at viewpoints rather than rushing through them. Two thoughtful neighborhood loops usually reveal more than one long cross-city march. A careful reading of Walking the Hills also places the subject within its surrounding districts, transport corridors, and named landmarks, making the resulting route more coherent.
