Why go
Grayson puts Banana Ball in an older baseball setting rather than a new arena. The stands and field carry nearly a century of Savannah sports history, but the meaningful visitor experience depends on securing a game ticket and attending an event.
What to look for
- The compact 1926 ballpark frames the field from close to the action.
- Savannah Bananas games turn the historic stadium into a live performance.
The full story
Grayson Stadium opened in 1926 as Municipal Stadium. After a destructive hurricane in 1940, a rebuilding effort supported in part by the Works Progress Administration reshaped the park; it was named for General William L. Grayson, who helped raise the money. Its past goes beyond the present entertainment format. In 1953 the first South Atlantic League game with both Black and white players took place here, a significant moment in the integration of professional baseball in the region. The stadium later hosted minor league teams and local sports before becoming home to the Savannah Bananas. An event today is the way to experience the old ballpark as a living venue. Its age and history add depth to the game, but they do not mean the gates are routinely open for sightseeing.
Useful to know
- Use the team’s official ticket channel for a game.
- Check the event listing before traveling; office hours do not establish public stadium access.
- For accessible seating, consult the operator early because the available spaces are limited.
