Bongwonsa Temple

A hillside temple on Ansan, Bongwonsa suits visitors seeking Taego Order traditions and a quieter religious setting beyond central palace routes.

Bongwonsa Temple

Why go

Bongwonsa offers a different Buddhist context from Seoul's busier central temples. Its importance to the Taego Order, association with the Yeongsanjae ritual and hillside setting make the visit primarily about living tradition rather than a checklist of monumental buildings alone.

What to look for

  • The complex serves as the head temple of the Taego Order of Korean Buddhism.
  • Bongwonsa is closely associated with the Yeongsanjae Buddhist ritual tradition.
  • Lotus displays add a seasonal focus to the temple grounds in summer.

The full story

Bongwonsa traces its foundation to 889 and Master Doseon. The temple originally stood near the present site of Yonsei University before moving to its current place on Ansan in 1748. It is now the head temple of the Taego Order of Korean Buddhism, giving it a distinct institutional identity within Seoul's varied Buddhist landscape. The complex has repeatedly faced destruction and rebuilding. Parts were lost during the Korean War, and a 1991 fire destroyed the main Buddha hall while another major hall was under construction. The rebuilt spaces therefore continue a long pattern of renewal rather than presenting an intact medieval compound. Bongwonsa is especially significant for its connection to Yeongsanjae, an elaborate Buddhist ritual tradition combining chant, movement, music and offerings. That living practice matters more than treating the temple as a static architectural display. Visitors should remember that the grounds support monastic life, education and ceremonies. Respectful pacing is part of understanding the place.

Useful to know

  • Check current visitor hours before making the hillside trip.
  • Wear shoes suited to the Ansan slope and allow a slower approach than at a street-level temple.
  • Keep clear of ceremonies and monastic activity; the complex is an active religious institution.
