Deoksugung Palace

Visit for Seoul’s clearest palace contrast: painted Joseon halls and quiet gardens share a compact compound with Western-style buildings from Korea’s imperial transition.

Deoksugung Palace

Why go

Deoksugung is easier to read than a vast palace complex and unusually rich in architectural contrast. Its royal residences, modern materials, and history around Emperor Gojong reveal a court adapting under intense political pressure. The surviving compound makes Korea’s transition from Joseon kingdom to modern empire visible in stone, timber, and stucco.

What to look for

  • Traditional painted timber halls beside Western-style architecture
  • Hamnyeongjeon, associated with Emperor Gojong’s final years
  • The walled palace setting close to City Hall

The full story

Deoksugung began as the residence of Prince Wolsan, an elder brother of King Seongjong, rather than as a purpose-built royal seat. It became a palace after the Japanese invasions of 1592 burned Seoul’s other royal compounds and King Seonjo needed a residence. Gwanghaegun was crowned here in 1608, but the complex later spent centuries as an auxiliary palace. After taking refuge at the Russian legation, Gojong returned in 1897 and expanded the grounds as the Korean Empire took shape. He continued living here after abdicating, and died in Hamnyeongjeon. The palace’s mixed architecture makes that unsettled transition visible. Traditional timber structures stand near buildings using stucco and Western forms, rather than presenting a single idealized Joseon style. Much of the compound was destroyed during the Japanese occupation, and only a fraction of its earlier fabric remains. Read the surviving grounds as evidence of adaptation, loss, and changing ideas of royal authority, not simply as a smaller version of Seoul’s larger palaces.

Useful to know

  • Use City Hall Station and allow time to compare buildings rather than rushing the compound.
  • Combine it with nearby Sungnyemun when tracing the old capital’s western and southern edge.
  • Check the official palace site for current admission and closure information.
