Why go

Gangnam shows a different Seoul from the palace-centered north: broad commercial avenues, convention and shopping complexes, and quieter side streets occupy the same district. Its scale makes contrasts worthwhile, but only when you choose a defined area rather than chase one map pin.

The full story

Gangnam-gu occupies a broad section of Seoul south of the Han River. Its name is now shorthand far beyond its administrative boundary, but the district is easier to understand through its separate urban clusters. Teheran-ro links the commercial area around Gangnam Station with Samseong-dong and the COEX convention and shopping complex. Along that corridor, large office buildings and wide roads express the scale of Seoul's late twentieth-century expansion. Move away from the main avenues, however, and the streets become smaller and more varied. That contrast is more revealing than any claim that Gangnam has one defining atmosphere. Samseong works for visitors combining exhibitions, shopping and Bongeunsa Temple; the Gangnam Station area offers a denser commercial street experience farther west. Because Gangnam-gu covers too much ground for an unfocused wander, the useful decision is geographic: choose one cluster, explore its immediate side streets and use rail for any move to the next.

• Ignore the single coordinate as a destination; it is only an orientation point for a large district.
• Choose either Samseong or Gangnam Station as your main cluster unless you have ample time.
