From the Serbia World / Stories

Serbia before the medieval kingdoms

Serbia’s archaeological sites connect Danube settlements with Roman cities. This background helps distinguish prehistoric Lepenski Vir and Vinča-Belo Brdo from the imperial world of Niš and Sremska Mitrovica.

Why go

For an archaeology-focused trip, the useful choice is between traces of early communities and the remains of an empire. Viminacium near Old Kostolac belongs to a different historical landscape from the settlements beside the Danube; knowing that distinction gives each stop a clearer purpose than treating every ruin alike.

The full story

Long before medieval Serbia, the territory held several overlapping cultural worlds. Starčevo and Vinča belong to its prehistoric story. Later, Thracian, Dacian and Illyrian communities encountered Greek expansion, while Celtic Scordisci established themselves in the region during the third century BC. These layers help explain why archaeology here extends far beyond Roman monuments. Roman rule connected the area to provinces stretching across the Balkans and the Danube frontier. Modern Belgrade was Singidunum, Niš was Naissos, and Sremska Mitrovica was Sirmium. The last of these served as an imperial capital during the Tetrarchy, when power was divided among several emperors. Constantine the Great is another central figure in the region’s Roman history, associated with the empire’s recognition of religious toleration. After the empire divided in 395, much of the territory remained in its eastern half. The later presence of South Slavs marks another transition, rather than the beginning of human settlement here.
