Vršac
Vršac lies in South Banat, where a hilltop castle changes the otherwise broad plain’s skyline. A visit combines town architecture with an uphill outing rather than a continuous flat walking circuit.
The castle’s donjon and restored walls provide the elevated perspective, while the twin towers and portals of Saint Gerhard’s Church reward attention in town. That contrast between hill and settlement also gives meaning to the name Vršac, derived from the Slavic word for “summit”.
What to look for
The castle overlooks the Banat plain from an exposed hilltop.
Saint Gerhard’s Church has twin neo-Gothic towers.
Useful to know
Allow for the uphill castle approach and keep the exposed summit for daylight.
Treat church interior access separately from an exterior architecture stop.
