Smederevo Fortress
Smederevo Fortress is a broad medieval stronghold at the meeting of the Danube and Jezava. Its low riverside position contrasts with Serbia's cliff-top castles.
Built for Despot Đurađ Branković's capital, the fortress preserves a large defensive enclosure and a more concentrated court area. The scale is best understood by walking along the walls and looking across the open interior. It is a useful destination in its own right rather than a substitute for distant Golubac.
