Why go
Completed in 1924, this headquarters served a city that had become China’s exchange for international mail. Its position between the commercial center and the railway station suited that function. Look up at the tower sculptures: Hermes, associated with messengers, gives the postal building an unusually direct architectural clue.
What to look for
- Three-story Corinthian columns organize the two main facades.
- A Baroque-style clock tower rises above the corner entrance.
- Hermes appears in the tower’s central sculptural group with Eros and Aphrodite.
Useful to know
- View the building from across Suzhou Creek to read both its scale and corner tower.
- Make it part of a creek-side architecture walk; verify interior access before adding a museum visit.
