Why go
The tower’s recognizable bottle-opener shape is easier to understand beside its neighbors than as an isolated height record. A 101-floor mixed-use building, it brings offices, hotel space and retail together on Century Avenue. Its KPF design gives the skyline a straight-edged counterpoint to the more rounded buildings around it.
What to look for
- A trapezoidal aperture cut through the summit
- A 492-meter tower facing Century Avenue
- Jin Mao and Shanghai Tower forming a contrasting group nearby
The full story
The World Financial Center belongs to the long development of Lujiazui as a financial district. Construction plans preceded its eventual completion in 2008, with work interrupted by the Asian financial crisis and later design changes. That extended process helps explain why the tower combines a strong symbolic outline with several commercial functions. Kohn Pedersen Fox designed the building, and Mori Building led its development. Offices, hotel accommodation and retail occupy the structure rather than a single-purpose monument. The summit opening gives the building its familiar nickname, but its position among other towers is equally revealing. Jin Mao draws on the rhythm of a pagoda, while Shanghai Tower uses a curved glass exterior. Seen together, these buildings show how the same district commissioned very different answers to the problem of making a skyscraper recognizable.
