Why go
Built from 1906 to 1910 with support from French Jesuit missionaries, the cathedral connects Xujiahui to Shanghai’s Catholic history. Its restored spires also mark a period of destruction and repair: they were demolished during the Cultural Revolution and rebuilt in 1982. Read the facade as both architecture and historical recovery.
What to look for
- Plain red-brick walls contrast with the cathedral’s tall paired spires.
- Pointed door and window arches establish its Gothic form.
- Rose windows appear on the facade and side elevations.
Useful to know
- Start with the courtyard-facing facade to take in the paired towers and pointed arches.
- Confirm cathedral visitor access separately before making the interior the focus of a Xujiahui visit.
