Why go
This compact route suits visitors who want to spend time with Siena’s art rather than cover many streets. Piazza del Duomo sets the cathedral opposite the former hospital, so the two sides of the square make sense together. Allow unhurried time for the cathedral interior and Duccio’s Maestà in the separate Cathedral Museum, then descend to the baptistery. Santa Maria della Scala is another substantial visit across the square. Palazzo delle Papesse is an optional last stop because its exhibition programme changes. Check current admission for each interior, especially after the published 2026 seasons, and leave the palace out if your museum time runs long.
