Siena Cathedral
Siena Cathedral gathers the city's black and white marble, sculpted pulpit and intricate pavement in one richly layered interior. It deserves time for details beyond the west façade.
The building joins Siena's architectural and artistic ambitions. Its striped stone carries through exterior and interior, while the floor, Nicola Pisano's pulpit and Piccolomini Library reward different ways of looking. The cathedral is a strong anchor for an art day because you can move from large-scale architecture to finely worked images without leaving the complex.
What to look for
Black and white marble stripes connect the outside and inside of the cathedral.
The inlaid pavement asks you to look down as well as toward the vaults.
The Piccolomini Library adds a concentrated painted interior to the visit.
Useful to know
Leave enough time for the floor, pulpit and library rather than stopping at the façade.
Check the cathedral's official timetable and floor display for your date.
