Torre del Mangia
The climb above Palazzo Pubblico gives a high view of Piazza del Campo and Siena's rooftops. Its roughly 400 steps make it a deliberate physical choice.
From the tower, the Campo's shell shape and the compact roofs around it become easier to understand than at street level. The view also reaches beyond the centre to the surrounding hills. Come for that change of scale if you are comfortable with a long stair climb, rather than treating the tower as an automatic add-on to the civic museum.
What to look for
Piazza del Campo's shell form is clear from above.
Siena's rooftops lead outward to the surrounding hills.
Useful to know
Plan for roughly 400 steps with no lift; the ascent is unsuitable for visitors who cannot manage stairs.
Check current ascent slots and weather conditions before committing to the climb.
Allow about 45 minutes for the ascent and view, separate from a Palazzo Pubblico visit.
