Ljubljana
Follow the Ljubljanica through Ljubljana’s old centre for bridges, market arcades and squares. This riverside walk gives a focused introduction to the capital; the castle and museums add separate visits.
Jože Plečnik gave the riverbanks a distinctive architectural rhythm, making bridges and everyday public spaces part of the attraction. Ljubljana also carries a longer history: Roman Emona preceded the Habsburg city that became the capital of independent Slovenia in 1991. The river offers a clear starting point for reading those layers.
What to look for
Prešeren Square opens onto the bridges and the old centre.
The Central Market arcades turn the river edge into an architectural feature.
Castle hill rises above the compact streets beside the Ljubljanica.
Useful to know
Link Prešeren Square, the riverbanks and Central Market as one outdoor walk.
Give the castle and museum interiors their own time beyond the riverside circuit.
