From the Taiwan World / Areas

Fo Guang Shan

Fo Guang Shan is a large Buddhist monastery complex in Kaohsiung’s Dashu District. Its halls and memorial center call for a deliberate visit.

Fo Guang Shan

Why go

Founded by Hsing Yun in 1967, the monastery became the center of a movement associated with Humanistic Buddhism. The adjacent Buddha Memorial Center adds a formal processional avenue, pagodas, shrines and a monumental Buddha figure. The scale and religious purpose make this a different experience from a brief city-temple stop.

What to look for

  • The monastery’s Great Hero Hall
  • Eight pagodas lining the Memorial Center approach
  • The seated Buddha beyond the Memorial Hall

Useful to know

  • Allow time to walk the long central approach before entering the halls.
  • Check current public access for individual religious spaces before setting out.
  • Move quietly through worship areas; this is an active Buddhist complex.
