Hualien City
Hualien is a Pacific-facing city on Taiwan’s east coast and a useful urban base for the surrounding region. Its coastal position is the main contrast with western cities.
Why go
The city’s location gives an east-coast trip a clear center before moving into mountain or shoreline landscapes. Its older name, Kiray, refers to the Sakiraya people; later Japanese and postwar names record changes in rule. That history adds meaning to local place names while the Pacific setting makes Hualien distinct from Taiwan’s western corridor.
